Plans for New Bus Lanes in India

India is the second largest country in terms of population with over 1.2 billion people and is continuously growing. Although there are varying modes of transportation including by land, water and air, access to all modes isn’t uniform across the country.

Private vehicles are used by the more affluent community and there are only about 103 million on the road and only 10% of households own a motorcycle. The primary mode of transportation is public transit, the most common being buses.

As a result of high bus usage, the government created an initiative in Delhi, the Indian capital, to reduce traffic congestion by creating an experimental fast lane for buses. This Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor system allows bus users a smoother ride and reduce traffic congestion.

Traffic Studies: Overview for Starting the Fall Count Season (Part 2)

Many organizations are preparing for the fall count season. Whether collecting traffic data in-house or using a data collection vendor, transportation professionals are ramping up their efforts for this busy season.

Proven Safety Countermeasures

In 2008, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) created a document outlining 9 safety countermeasures which utilize a data driven approach to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on American highways.

According to Anthony T. Furst, Associate Administrator with the FHWA Office of Safety, these countermeasures’ implementation are tracked and monitored. Based on the most recent research, the FHWA updated the safety countermeasures in January 2012.

It is the 11th annual event which aims to bring national attention to motorist and worker safety as well as mobility issues in work zones.

A Brief History of Roundabouts: Once Bitten, Twice Shy

The modern roundabout is a beautiful thing. Traffic flow is improved, they look nice and they are safer than traditional intersections. In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Status Report about Roundabouts, they cite research from the University of Maine that found a 39% reduction in crashes, a 76% decrease in injury-producing crashes, and a 90% decrease in collisions involving fatal or incapacitating injuries when studying a sample of 25 intersections turned into roundabouts. Other research finds that while roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections, they also have the potential to reduce traffic delay by up to 75%.

The Role of Video in Traffic Data Collection


Video has the power to greatly simplify traffic data collection; saving time and money, increasing field-worker safety, and accurately recording traffic without missing a movement. Recording field observations with video preserves all traffic movements during a segment in time, from which much richer data can be extracted. Using video processing software can produce more versatile and accurate traffic survey reports than with conventional data collection methods.

Counting Roundabout Volume: Challenges

Historically, Large Roundabout Counts had been difficult to collect. They were hard to staff, were expensive and experienced a high rate of error. Since Large Roundabout Studies can be done as a feature of our existing data collection system, customers can use their existing equipment and software. The innovation lies in Miovison’s algorithm that correlates data from multiple video collection units (VCUs) at separate legs of a roundabout to perform a complete study.
